You are about to let something read your child a story. You should know precisely what that something is. So: the stories are written by artificial intelligence. Not by a person, not by a teacher, not by a children's author on staff. Here is what that does and doesn't mean, in plain words.

What the AI actually does

When you type your child's name and pick a theme, a writing model composes a brand-new story — words, characters, ending, all of it — in a few seconds. Nobody has read that story before you do. It has never existed until that moment, and it will never be written the same way twice.

Then a second system reads it aloud. That narration voice is also synthetic: a text-to-speech voice, chosen for warmth and a slow bedtime pace.

That's the honest core of it. Two machines, one story, made for one child, once.

What people built around it

The story is generated. The rules it has to obey are not — those are the part we spent our time on, and they're the reason a story for a three-year-old doesn't read like a story for a nine-year-old.

• Age-tuned style rules. Four age bands, each with its own written craft rules: how long a sentence may be, how much repetition to use, how the paragraphs should breathe, which storytelling voice to write in. The youngest band caps sentences at six words. The oldest allows twenty-five and asks for real metaphor. These were written by hand, informed by how published children's books for each age are actually built.
• A curated theme list. The themes we offer are ones we chose. When a parent types their own instead, it goes through a content filter first.
• Rules about what a bedtime story may contain. No death, no real-world danger, no bullying as the point of the story, no villains that frighten. Trouble in our stories is gentle and low-stakes, and every story ends with the child settling into sleep.
• A forbidden-word pass. After the story is written and before you ever see it, certain words are swapped for gentler ones, per age band.
• A length target. Every story aims at about three minutes of narration, because that is roughly how long a wind-down wants to be.

The part we say no to: no AI pictures

Most story apps in this category generate illustrations. We deliberately don't, and it isn't a feature we're behind on — it's a choice.

A bedtime story works best in a dim room with the screen face-down. The moment there are pictures, the phone has to be held up, looked at, and argued about. And an illustration decides for a child what the dragon looks like. A narrated story leaves that job where it belongs: the narration and your child's own imagination make the pictures.

It costs us something. If your little one wants to look at their story, we're honestly not the app for that — and we say so on our comparison page, where we list what the other apps do better.

What we will never claim

Some apps in this space imply a person wrote the story, or that an educator reviewed it. We won't, because for us neither is true:

• No human author. A person did not write your child's story.
• No educator or clinician review. No credentialed reviewer approves individual stories — they're brand new and read first by you.
• No promise about sleep. Our stories are built to wind down, not to guarantee anything. No app has met your toddler.

What happens to your child's name

The name is sent to write and narrate that one story, and it isn't stored on our servers afterwards. We don't train anything on your family. There's no account to attach it to in the first place — we never ask for an email, and we have no way to know who you are. When it gets something wrong

Generated text can still land oddly — a strange sentence, a name mispronounced by the narrator, a story that doesn't suit the night. No filter catches everything, and we'd rather tell you that than imply a guarantee we can't keep. There's a thumbs-down on every story and a feedback form in Settings, and a real person reads what comes through.
